Dr. Laura Smiley, DACVIM
Dr. Laura Smiley graduated from the Cornell School of Veterinary Medicine in 1987, after receiving the highly coveted “Gentle Doctor Award“. Before attending veterinary school she received her master’s degree in Ethology at the University of Connecticut, and then pursued a PhD in Molecular and Developmental Genetics at the Fox Chase Cancer Institute just outside of Philadelphia. Halfway through her PhD program she decided to change career choices and go into veterinary medicine where she could express her love of animals.
After graduating from Cornell, Dr. Smiley did an internship in medicine and surgery at the prestigious Animal Medical Center in New York City. Following her internship she stayed on to complete a two year residency in Internal Medicine. She became board certified in Internal Medicine in 1993. She loves working through complex internal medicine cases and she has, recently, become more interested in critical care medicine. She sees referral cases, but is also intimately involved in internal medicine and critical care consultations on all in-house cases. She does the abdominal ultrasounds, endoscopy, rhinoscopy, bronchoscopy, and chemotherapy.
Dr. Smiley’s goal with all her patients is to do the right thing for both the animal and their owners. Compassionate care that focuses on the whole clinical picture is what she strives for every day. When she is not working she loves spending time with her baseball-playing, rambunctious ten year old son and their three cats.
